Event description
KiranAhluwalia’s music delves into the rich vocal traditions of India and Pakistan drawing from Sufi, Qawalli, and Punjabi Folk styles. Effortlessly weaving lyrical introspection with rhythmic allure she soulfully intertwines the sounds of South Asia withWest African Blues and Jazz.
Deeply committed to music as a force for social change and protest, she sings inUrdu, Hindi, and Punjabi—yet the emotions she conveys transcend language to bring us to a place of common humanity.
Ahluwalia’s four-piece band includes guitar, tabla, accordion/organ, and drums. At the helm of the group isPakistani-American virtuoso guitarist Rez Abbasi. Kiran and Rez are a real-life couple, one born in India, the other in Pakistan. Having grown up in the Diaspora they crossed ethnic and religious lines between their two warring motherlands and embody the idea that art knows no borders, using their music to dissolve divisions and create profound human connections.
