"'Absent Oracle' ponders how familial archives shift in the presence of grief, and how value is assigned to objects as a result of the generational effects of poverty. Narratives that are created and disseminated by one individual collapse upon their death, as experienced in 2019 with the passing of the artist’s mother. Within the complicated landscape of loss there can be new freedom for the living to probe at shared history without the (seemingly) all-knowing eye of a matriarch contradicting and reshaping each story and experience. Using methods borrowed from traditional textile crafts (sewing, quilting, weaving), and found objects, “Abstract Oracle” is one part of the messy archive of a blended family. Clare Lannan is an artist, educator, and researcher living and working as an uninvited guest in traditional Lekwungen Territories (Victoria, BC).
